Welcome to the CEFC

The French Centre for Research on Contemporary China (CEFC) is a publicly funded research institute, based in Hong Kong, and established in 1991. A branch office has also been set up in Taipei. The CEFC’s mission is to explore the political, economic, social and cultural developments in the contemporary Chinese world (China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, etc.).

Besides organizing seminars and international conferences, the CEFC publishes China Perspectives (sister publication of the French-language Perspectives chinoises), a quarterly entirely dedicated to the study of the contemporary China.

The CEFC is part of the network of the 27 French research centres abroad, which are supported by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the CNRS. Seven researchers, one post-doctoral researcher, four PhD candidates, eight associate researchers and six administrative emlpoyees currently work at the CEFC.

A scientific board, composed of academics, convenes in Paris every year to determine the CEFC's scientific policy.

The CEFC organises frequent seminars and conferences. It also publishes a quarterly, Perspectives chinoises, and its English edition, China Perspectives. These two journals are entirely devoted to the contemporary Chinese world on which they provide analysis encompassing socio-political, economic, cultural and literary aspects.

In 1994, the CEFC opened a branch in Taipei on the campus of the Academica Sinica (in Nankang). The branch hosts research fellows and has close working ties with Taiwanese universities.

The CEFC was founded by Michel Bonnin, who became its first director (1991-1998), followed by Jean-Pierre Cabestan (1998-2003) and, Gilles Guiheux (2003-2006). Jean-François Huchet is currently the director.
